The Truman Show Assignment

                “The whole world revolves around me.” A narcissist’s dream comes true. For a person looking to escape, a nightmare. The Truman Show illustrates the life of Truman Burbank, who lives in a world that literally, revolves around him. For the entirety of his life, he has been manipulated by those around him and above him. Altogether, I quite enjoyed the movie, for various reasons. As a film, The Truman Show is able to depict several interesting areas of video production through camera angles and movements, strong storylines and by showing how mass media has an impact on its real life audience.

                The camera angles and movements used in The Truman Show are important to the plot and the tones set in the movie itself. On the set of the Truman Show, Christof states that in the huge soundstage, there are 5,000 hidden cameras total. And for thirty years of his life, Truman has never known they existed. To show the viewers the cameras are hidden, the makers of the Truman show made some interesting changes to the cameras. For example, there is a camera hidden in Truman’s car radio. When this camera is shooting, there are actual graphics on the screen, like a radio would have, and you can see Truman as you would if you were in the radio itself. This is the same for the camera in his bathroom mirror, and also gives the viewer a glimpse of what Truman probably wouldn’t want others to see, like self pep talks. A scene I thought did a great job on camera movements and angles were the sailboat scene, when Truman is sailing away. It was able to combine the audiences view, Truman view and a third person point of view and blend them well. This also helped with the tone of the scene, as the audience camera was shaking around and the third person camera did great long shots to show the severity of the “storm” Truman was sailing through. In these ways, the camera angles and movements were important to the plot and the tones in The Truman Show.

The storyline of The Truman Show is unique, heartfelt and leaves the audience with room for thought. In the beginning of this movie, it is easy for a person to be confused. Many of the answers to their questions come out later in the movie, which makes the moviegoer want to keep watching. Unlike most movies, you can’t really put The Truman Show in an exact category, and I liked this because it made it more interesting and unpredictable. I thought the concept of the movie was very unique, having some ones whole life being broadcasted live, 24/7. To me, the idea seemed impossible and unethical at first. Then I realized that perhaps The Truman Show is a sort of cautionary tale, with the way reality television is heading, something like The Truman Show could be a possibility.  Although I felt sympathetic for Truman as he tried desperately to get out of Sea Haven, I also found the movie to be heartwarming. The subplot of Truman and Sylvia and his escape in the ending are examples of this. I also liked the ending because it leaves the audience with a clincher and room for thought. Does he escape? Or is he forced back? The audience gets the pleasure of deciding that. Because of the films ability to be unique, warm and open ended, I enjoyed it very much.

The Truman Show has many different examples of how mass media impacts our society. It is widely known that where there is media, there is advertising somewhere close by. Because the show is broadcasted 24/7, there is no place for commercials. Thus, product placement is necessary. The Truman Show takes on an interesting approach to product placement, making the actors, or Truman’s friends and family, do the ads. Meryl is a prime example for this. Often times in the movie, Meryl interrupts whatever Truman is doing to tell him about an “amazing” product she is using, like a lawn mower or blades. While recommending and giving Truman unnecessary facts about a great new cocoa she’s tried, he even asks her “Who are you talking to?” In the movie, product placement is used in sort of a tongue and cheek way. The effect that The Truman Show has on the world is immense, and the movie does a good job of showing this. Different times in the movie, there’s a glimpse of a couple of Truman fans reactions to whatever is happening on the show. The fans, like a man in a bathtub and ladies who have Truman’s face plastered on practically everything, are always watching, and react to him like they actually know him. They feel as if they have this relation to a person they’ve never even met! The movie also shows how Truman fans come in the masses. There is Truman bars loaded with people and even large showings with thousands of people! This shows how dedicated and how fascinated our society can be when it comes to things like television shows. In examples from scenes from The Truman Show, we can see how mass media impacts not only the audience in the movie, but ourselves as an audience in real life.

The Truman Show depicts several interesting areas of the video production through camera angles and movements, storylines and the impact mass media has on our society.  For these reasons, it was interesting and enjoyable to watch. Hopefully, this movie will serve as a cautionary tale, so that someone else won’t have to deal with the same fate that Truman was lucky to get out of.
