News Story

On its opening night, 12.3 million viewers tuned in to watch the season premiere of the show everyone’s talking about: Glee. Many Glee fans, or “Gleeks” as they call themselves, were excited to weigh in about the new music used in the first episode.

“I really liked how they had something for everyone, and I definitely think this was a better song selection than last years. I loved Charice!”
They also had recommendations for what they’d like to see the cast cover.

“Well, they're already doing the Brittney episode next week which I'm SUPER excited for, besides that anything Disney or like, maybe songs from "Mamma Mia" ABBA songs would be fun!”

“I’d like them to sing a Michael Jackson tribute episode, especially I Want You Back. Also, Grace Kelly by Mika.”

Not only was the show filled with new music, but new additions to the cast as well. Three new characters joined the cast, but many fans seemed to take a liking to a particular character…

1. I really liked Rachel and Sunshine's cover of "Telephone" and then Sunshine's singing "Listen". Actually, I really, really liked all of them! But I was kind of bummed that there wasn't a big group cover of a song besides "Empire State of Mind"
2. Well, they're already doing the Brittney episode next week which I'm SUPER excited for, besides that anything Disney or like, maybe songs from "Mamma Mia" ABBA songs would be fun!
3. I like Charice as a foreign exchange student, but the new blonde guy Sam has chipmunk cheeks...he's not very interesting either.
4. It was pretty awesome! But I'm still super pumped for the next weeks!

For every story we do for the flash/evtv, we interview at least three people who are masters at what they're talking about.

4. Gather interviews.
Ask open-ended questions.
Get good sound bytes."Whats a sound byte: A piece of audio that can stand by itself."
Have person restate the question in the interview.

5. Organize your sound bytes.
Which quotes should be used?
How can I organize the quotes to tell a story?

6. Write segues in your story.
Use words to tie the interviews together.

Use attention getter at the introduction but avoid rhetorical questions.

Law and Ethics Notes

Notes on Broadcast Journalism Law/Ethics

1. What are the 5 freedoms of the 1st amendment?
-Freedom of Religion
-Freedom of the Press
-Freedom of Speech
-Right to Assembly
-Right to Petition

2. What is the Tinker Standard?
Student speech cannot be censored as long as it does not "materially disrupt class work or involve substantial disorder or invasion of the rights of others." The Tinker Standard ensures that rights for students are not left outside the gate, first amendment rights protect students in and out of school.

3. What is the Fraser Standard?
Because school officials have an "interest in teaching students the boundaries of socially appropriate behavior," they can censor student speech that is vulgar or indecent, even if it does not cause a "material or substantial disruption."

4. What is the Hazelwood Standard?
Censorship of school sponsered student expression is permissible when school officials can show that it is "reasonably related to legitimate pedagogical concerns".Writing about going against what the school teaches means the school can censor it.

5. What is the Frederick Standard?
During school authorized activities/field trips school rules still apply, as far as what you can or cannot do.

6. What is the definition of libel?
False statements that are visual or written down, that defames someone's character. For a statement to be defamatory, it must be more than insulting or offensive, actually harming the person's reputation.

Define “Broadcast Journalism” in 1-3 sentences.
Broadcast Journalism
Journalism-Current events that are newsworthy.
Broadcast-Delivering or sharing

Sharing or delivering current events that are newsworthy, via radio, television or the internet.



List and describe the six criteria of newsworthiness.

TITLE DESCRIPTION EXAMPLE
1 Timeliness- People care about things that are happening now. EX: Weather, traffic, big news stories.

2. Significance- An event that impacts a number of people. EX: Oil Spill

3. Prominence- We care about important, "famous" people. EX: Britney shaving head, President Obama buying dog

4. Unusualness- Things that are unusual are newsworthy.


5.Proximity: We care about things that are close to us. EX: Weather, sports, traffic


6. Human Interest- Feel good news stories, might not be necessarily news worthy, but it warms the heart. Fun to watch. EX: Baby animal at the zoo, some one dying on accicent.




What are the differences between print journalism and broadcast journalism?
1. The ability to broadcast live:Up to date, current

2. Reader has the ability to pick and choose with print

3. Much more details in print story

4.Broadcast Journalism allows you to be much more descriptive with pictures and audio, rather than words.

How is the Internet impacting broadcast journalism?
It's instantaneous, it combines the strongest points of both types of journalism and puts them into one, easily accessible way to recieve news.
